Chapter Seven

—Dee—

Being force-fed necrotizing vegetation by an asshole dragon in the shitty castle...

“Staahhp!” I managed to shout. Then snapped my mouth shut. My throat and jaw were suddenly working again. Hmm. How was that possible?

“I see your voice is returning, Desma,” the dragon man said. “I told you it would help.”

“You know my name,” I said, still hoarse. My thoughts were clearing now as the liquid from the pulp saturated my system. “What's yours?”

“My name is not important, maly havran. When this is over, we shall not meet again.”

“Because I'll be dead?”

“Only if it comes to it.”

“Fantastic.” I rolled my eyes. Shit. I could roll my eyes again. I wiggled my brows. Check check. I narrowed a suspicious gaze at the dragon. “Why do you keep calling me Molly Hahvran?”

“Maly havran,” he repeated.

“That's what I said.”

The corner of his lip lifted. “It means little raven.”

“Oh, because of my hair.” I'd been getting raven comments my whole life. Unlike most people who had really dark brown hair, mine was truly black, the kind of black that sometimes looked a little blue. “Still, it doesn't seem fair that you know my name but I don't know yours.”

He sighed, smoke curling from his nostrils. “Andrak,” he said.

“No last name?”

“I come from a time when there was no such thing as a last name.”

He didn't look much more than mid-thirties, but I knew when it came to supernaturals that appearances were deceiving. After all, I was a centenarian, and I still looked like I did the day I turned twenty-eight. I could sit up now, so I scooted until my back was against the wall. “So, really freaking old, huh?”

Andrak nodded.

I still hurt all over, and the stomach cramps were constant, but my mobility was better. “That bloodroot works. It tastes like crap and grass had a baby with an unripe persimmon, but it definitely works. How did you know?”

“You are not the first vampire I have encountered, little one. It won't do much to satisfy your hunger, but it will reverse some of the deterioration. You should eat some more.”

I could still taste the last bit I'd swallowed, and it was almost as unpleasant as the pain. “Maybe in a bit.” Had Andrak told me he wanted something that was taken from him? I thought so, but I was still struggling to figure out what I thought was going on versus what I actually knew. “Why do you want the artifacts?” I asked. “Where they yours? Or do you want them to trade for something that's yours?”

“Yes,” he said quietly. “To both.”

“King Legabute will never trade you my life for those pieces. He thinks it’s a weapon against the necromancers.” When Andrak winced, I figured I was getting close to the truth. “Is it a weapon?”

“It is not,” Andrak said. “But it was used as a weapon once. I plan to undo that so I can be whole again.”

“I don't understand.”

“I know, little raven.” Andrak stood up. “And I know your king won't give up his prize to save you, but I believe your father will.
